Carrot And Beetroot, The Jamaican Way
Sunday dinner is very special to Jamaicans, we spend most of the day cooking meat or fish to go with rice and fresh salad. Then finished with a beautiful glass of with on of our favourite drink.
Carrot and beetroot is one of our favourite juices that goes so well with our Sunday dinners.
I’ve always loved dinner time on Sundays, not just for the amazing dinners my grandmother would make but also for the juices she would make and carrot and beetroot was one of my favourites.
What You Need
Here what you need for this taste carrot and beetroot juice: Carrot, beetroot unsweetened milk, condensed milk, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon.
You can use any unsweetened milk of your choice, I used unsweetened almond milk. The milk can also be replaced with water, which is how my grandmother use to make it.
How To Make The Carrot and Beetroot Juice
This carrot and beetroot drink is ready in a few simple steps. Start with washing and peeling the carrot and beetroot, then chopped them into chucks before adding then to the blender. Depending on how powerful your blender is, three inches chucks should be good enough.
Add milk (or water) to the blender and blend until smooth. Strain with a fine mesh strainer. You can also leave the bits in. As a little girl I usually like chewing on the carrot and beetroot bit.
The carrot and beetroot is sometime boiled before it is blended. My grandmother usually made the drink this way. However, I have grown to not like the taste very much when the vegetables are cooked before it is blended.
If you wish to try the recipe this way, boiled the carrot and beetroot in water and use that same water to blend them. Then you would sweeten with condensed milk.
May Jamaicans add dragon stout or Guinness to give the drink a kick. Keep is mind that both are alcoholic beverages and children can’t have it if you make this version.
This recipe is pretty much vegan except for the condensed milk, but you can us your favourite vegan sweetener or this vegan condensed milk if you want a vegan version.
